A “Mechanical Brake” applies pressure to hold the drum from turning and releasing cable when the winch is not operating in the recovering process of the cable. The Mechanical Brake is applied mechanically (automatically) and cannot be applied or controlled by the operator of the winch, Mechanical Brakes are normally found on winches and are different than the brakes found on a Hoist. Hoist’s generally have a Friction Type Brake (shoe or disc) or positive locking gear and clog that is required for overhead lifting and these brakes can be controlled by the operator. The Hoist Friction Brake is used to release the cable and lower whatever the hoist is lifting. Our Winches do not use Friction Type Brakes or a positive locking gear with a clog, because our winches are NOT designed for overhead lifting.
Please remember our Winches are not a hoist and not design for and should never be used for overhead lifting or lifting/transporting Humans
