Wireless remote trouble shooting:
Make sure remote and receiver stickers have matching numbers that prove they are a matching pair.
The next step would be to check the electrical connections in the winch.
To do this, disconnect the winch from the power source and then remove the 4 screws that hold the on the winch cover.
Then gently lift the cover up and over to the side so the connections can be seen – note that the cover won’t be able to move very far as the wires will still be connected to the plug that is part of the cover.
Make sure the red wire is connected to the positive terminal and the black wire is connected to the negative terminal.
There are only supposed to be 4 wires in setup, see wiring photo showing how the wiring should look.
Please take a look at the wire pointed out in the attached picture. If you find a loose or bad connection that you can fix, then the wireless remotes will work.
If you cannot see an issue with that wire, a replacement wire harness may be needed. (Short Harness Socket # KWR17036)
Replacing the wire harness and connecting the new harness as shown in the wire diagram should allow your winch to function with the wireless remotes and have your light on your wired remote work.
When following the attached instructions, did the light (C) on the wireless remote come on when you held both buttons (A & B) for 5 seconds?
It should stay on after releasing those buttons.
And, when that light is on, does the light flicker when pressing buttons A or B?
The KWR17036 Short Harness is a replacement for KW, KV and KU winch. On the KU winches Red Wire between Blue and White Wire does not get used and it can be cut off or capped with a wire nut (See Image Below). Only the Red Wire between Black and Blue is used.
The curved plate is held onto the mounting plate with 3 screws and locking washers. The curve of it will be orientated towards the rear of the winch and keeps tension on the rope when the unit is put into Free-spool mode (clutch released), this prevents the rope from doing what we call “Birds Nest” or releasing all of its tension and making a big mess of the rope. This will apply a small amount of pressure against the winch / mounting plate when the customer attempts to mount it with the mounting bolts.
Sometimes after mounting the spring plate it is easier to mount the roller fairlead with the bolts inserted from the winch side out and the nuts on the roller fairlead side before mounting the winch to the mounting plate.
Q. Can the wire rope on KU6.0 be changed to synthetic rope?
A. Yes, the specifications for the synthetic rope are 60’ length x 1/4” diameter, item number KUA60065S-1. You will also need to change your roller fairlead to a hawse fairlead, item number is KTA14058-1.
Q. I see on the spec sheet the 6.0 comes with 60’ of line. I am changing my setup, and need 100’ of line. Can that be done?”
A. Is your rope “Wire rope or Synthetic rope?” 60’ length is for our synthetic rope , but regardless the rope is weight rated to make sure the winch can be rated at a 6,000 lbs. winch capacity. To meet the rope weight rating of 6,000 lbs. the diameter of the special synthetic rope is 1/4” and the winch drum capacity will only allow 60’ of length, so you would not have the drum capacity to load 100’. Changing the rope diameter and weight rating is NOT recommended and should NEVER be done to gain rope length. This would be a “Safety Issue” reducing the weight capacity of the winch and would void warranty and product liability.
